RWM’s vision as an organisation is to create a safer future by managing radioactive waste effectively, to protect people and the environment. We collaborate with experts on multi-million-pound research programmes and radioactive waste producers to find ways to package it that are suitable for disposal in the Geological Disposal Facility, providing advice to the Nuclear Decommissioning Authority and Government.

Role description

Radioactive Waste Management (RWM) is looking for an Environmental Assessment Manager to join them as they progress in the Geological Disposal Facility (GDF) programme – the UK’s largest environmental protection project. As a specialist in Environmental Assessment, you will:

  • Maintain and implement RWM’s strategy for environmental and sustainability assessments.
  • Procure and manage supply chain support for this work.
  • Support the development and implementation of RWM’s Sustainable Design Objectives.
  • Assess the non-radiological implications of radioactive waste packaging proposals.
  • Ensure that your environmental and sustainability assessment work is properly integrated with RWM’s wider work programme – particularly the GDF siting process, design development and radiological safety assessments.

Essential skills

To be successful in this role you will have experience of working within the UK regulatory, policy and good practice framework for environmental and sustainability assessments. You will also have experience of producing specialist technical reports supporting statutory assessments such as EIA and Habitats Regulations Assessment.

As a nuclear project this could be a really interesting opportunity if your environmental experience has been developed in other sectors, particularly if this has included work on large scale infrastructure projects, or in a highly regulated environment. Some experience of socio-economic assessment and health impact assessment would also be very useful.

In addition, you will draw on your experience of managing relationships with regulators & other external stakeholders as you act as an ambassador for RWM.
