Looking to apply your scientific background to further Environmental Projects? Radioactive Waste Management (RWM) is looking for two Research Managers to join them in permanent roles.

Role description

You will join a passionate team responsible for developing, maintaining and communicating RWM’s scientific knowledge within the scope of (i) bentonite- and cement-based engineered barriers, or (ii) gas generation, migration and modelling, making these exciting career development opportunities. You will work closely with leading experts and represent RWM at national and international scientific events and meetings. You will use your professional and academic experience to provide research input to disposability assessments.

Responsibilities

In addition, you will be responsible for:

  • Obtaining solutions as required by the UK Geological Disposal Facility programme (including technical knowledge and modelling capability) by acting as an intelligent customer for RWM in relevant engineered barriers / gas processes.
  • Scientific liaison with university departments, industry-wide scientific fora and scientific institutes, both in the UK and overseas.
  • Acting as technical authority and providing authoritative advice and input to RWM in engineered barriers / gas issues, this may include interactions with the regulators and other key stakeholders.
  • Interpretation of research outcomes and translating these into advice for internal stakeholders.
  • Understanding the content and relevance of overseas research programmes to RWM’s safety case and engineering interests.

Essential skills

You will be leading the definition, procurement and interpretation of the results of research, development and demonstration studies on behalf of RWM. Additionally, you will work closely with leading experts in industry and academia, on a national and international level, to provide a roadmap of the delivery.
