Thomas Thor has been engaged by Canadian Nuclear Laboratories (CNL) to find an expert in Radiation Detection for a permanent role based in Chalk River, Ontario.

CNL’s Applied Physics Branch explores and investigates the development and applications of radiation based systems and detectors, including performing experiments, developing physics models and simulations, and building, testing, and evaluating prototypes or third-party devices. Work is performed in a variety of program areas, and in particular Safety and Security, Energy, and Health.
Within the area of Safety and Security, Applied Physics Branch pursues senior expertise and leadership to maintain and grow CNL’s position in: nuclear instrumentation (detector design, development, and testing), electronics expertise, optics, simulations and modelling (e.g., GEANT4 simulation of novel detectors or systems), algorithm development, data analysis, and system/equipment testing.
The expert in Radiation protection will report to the Applied Physics Branch Manager, and have the following responsibilities:
– Identify new opportunities as a result of scientific investigations and leads R&D activities to exploit new prospects. Organize, manage, and propose projects in support of CNL’s areas of nuclear safety and security, energy, health, and commercial prospects.
– Provide advice on strategic direction, planning, and coordination of major research programs.
– Represent organizational or national scientific interests at national and international meetings, and helps grow and direct CNL involvement in these activities.
– Lead large groups of scientific and technical staff in highly technical applications, and is responsible for the motivation and guidance of the team and their technical output.
– Has the ability to handle experimental and computational physics problems; devise new approaches, apply existing criteria in new manners, and draw complex conclusions.
– Can develop and effectively articulate novel ideas, concepts, and proposals for new projects for existing or proposed new customers.
– Direct and develop improved modelling methods for Special Nuclear Materials
(SNM) detection, nuclear forensics, or radiation detector technologies.
– Previous experience within the Nuclear industry
– Background in Radioactive detectors, security fields
– Proven leadership experience leading scientific and technical staff in the accomplishment of scientific endeavours and in the application of applied research for internal or external customers.
– Strong technical problem solving skills, particularly with multi-disciplinary teams and challenges, make recommendations on technical issues, and prepare work plans with minimal supervision.
– Good computer skills, including word processing, spreadsheets. Good analytical, documentation and communication skills
– History of working carefully, safely, and accurately, with good knowledge of and commitment to quality assurance
– Practical knowledge and hands-on experience with computer hardware and software required for physics experiments and applications.
– Experience in Monte Carlo methods would be an asset
