Thomas Thor Associates has been engaged by the World Association of Nuclear Operators (WANO) to provide Global Executive Search services for the CEO position, based in London, UK.

WANO unites every company and country in the world that has an operating commercial nuclear power plant to achieve the highest possible standards of nuclear safety. More than 150,000 nuclear professionals work for over 130 members of WANO. Together, they operate 450 reactors across the globe.

WANO consists of a Governing Board, a central office in London and regional centres in Atlanta, Paris, Moscow and Tokyo, each with their own regional Governing Boards. Policy is set by the Governing Board and all policies and programmes are implemented by the WANO London office and the regional centres.

WANO works to maximise the safety and reliability of nuclear power plants worldwide by working together to assess, benchmark and improve performance through mutual support, exchange of information and emulation of best practices.The organisation exists purely to help its members accomplish the highest levels of operational safety and reliability. This is achieved through a series of highly-regarded programmes; Peer Review, Performance Analysis, Member Support, Training & Development and Corporate Communications and access to technical support and a global library of operating experience. WANO cuts across political barriers and interests. The work of WANO will continue to ensure global leadership in nuclear safety.

Role description

The role of the CEO is to srve as the principal interface between WANO and the leadership of member utilities by providing information regarding WANO member and industry performance. Serve as the principal interface to for coordination with international organisations that promote the safety of nuclear power plants. Responsibilities

This role includes, but is not limited to, the following responsibilities:

  • Develop an annual plan for operation of the association in conjunction with an annual budget and funding scheme. Establish a WANO London Office cost control system for approving, tracking and reporting costs of the association. Provide the WANO Governing Board with annual reports on the progress of work identified by the annual plan in conjunction with costs versus budget and at other frequencies that shall be decided by the WANO Governing Board, as required.
  • Achieve WANO’s mission. Develop and implement strategies, vision, direction, goals and programmes in the regional centres consistent with the WANO principles, and provide the WANO Governing Board and members with feedback on areas requiring further attention or action.
  • Provide leadership and direction for the activities of the London Office to achieve effective implementation of its functions. Lead a team of directors by providing direction and supervision, and undertake any personnel administration consummate with the role. Staff the London Office with capable people and develop their skills and abilities to support WANO’s mission.

Essential skills

  • A BSc Undergraduate degree in a scientific, technical field
  • Superior command of the English language, both verbally and written, with the ability to convey complex information to diverse audiences
  • Experience working with nuclear power or nuclear materials. Either direct or relevant experience in key aspects of commercial nuclear power including management, operations, maintenance, engineering, training, fire protection, operating experience, chemistry, and/or radiological protection
  • Experience in using a range of key performance indicators to improve business performance
  • Demonstrable experience in successfully operating a business unit
  • Experience in successfully building and leading teams in a multicultural environment
  • Demonstrable experience in mentoring and coaching peers
  • Demonstrated capability in change management across multiple organisations
  • Demonstrable experience in managing budgets

Desired skills

  • MBA or MS in a related field
  • Experience of managing multicultural teams in geographically diverse locations
  • Demonstrable experience of participation in or overseeing WANO programme activities
  • Experience of managing complex projects and delivering them within scope
  • Experience of setting up and running a business
  • Experience of evaluating outsourcing alternatives
