Adding value and expertise to a well-known growing global organization, also operating in Canada, our client, Moltex Energy, is currently looking for a Chemist.  This is a permanent position based in New Brunswick, Canada.

Role description

You are a highly capable molten salt chemist with extensive experience in morphological and chemical characterization.  You will be applying your expertise to plan and lead research programs focused on understanding the treatment of nuclear waste and chemical behaviour of molten fuel salts, to support design activities and verify design requirements, in both static and dynamic environments.

Knowledge, Experience and Skills

A highly effective communicator with strong problem-solving and technical skills. You take initiative and are delivery focused and technically strong.  You will be responsible for the:

  • Development and continuous improvement of the research program to verify and establish chemical processes.
  • Prepare and characterize surrogate and nuclear fuel salts.
  • Perform experiments to develop used nuclear fuel recycling processes.
  • Establish suitable facilities for molten salt chemistry experiments.
  • Ensure radioactive materials handling meets safety requirements.
  • Train and supervise interns in the handling of molten salts and use of common analysis techniques such as electrochemistry.
  • Document findings in a structured manner and report key findings to relevant stakeholders.

Essential skills

  • Experience using electrochemical methods to study chemical behavior is required.
  • Experience of handling and purifying molten salts is required.
  • Experience with chemical analysis techniques such as UV-vis, IR or Raman spectroscopy, ICP-OES/MS and X-ray diffraction is required.
  • Proven ability to collaborate in a multidisciplinary environment.

Desired skills

  • PhD in molten salt chemistry or related field and experience handling molten salts is strongly preferred.
  • Experience of handling radioactive materials.
  • Ambitious to become an industry recognized leader in SSR chemistry.
  • An excellent team worker who will integrate well with other parts of the engineering and design team to ensure progress of reactor designs as a whole as well as the chemistry.
