Role description

The Disposal Strategy Manager  is required to provide detailed technical and strategic support to Strategic Authority to underpin intelligent client capacity whilst collaborating closely with Strategy Implementation Managers (SIMs), Waste Programme Team, Business Planning Team and SLC Technical Experts on Waste Management.

Responsibilities

  • Act as a central source of expertise on waste disposal techniques and policy with particular responsibility for international comparisons and details of policy and legal positions.
  • Support Strategic Authority with detailed technical information.
  • Provide a resource to support governments in the development of policies.
  • Act as a central source of expertise, maintaining currency of knowledge, particularly with respect to international equivalents and on legal and policy positions.
  • Support Site Facing Teams and others with technical knowledge necessary for assurance  including participation in assurance reviews.
  • Support Strategic Authority (SA) with detailed technical information providing definitive briefs on specific matters.
  • Draft strategy papers and strategic documents (for example strategy positions for consultation).
  • Ensure Client strategic materials on Integrated Waste Management are current and consistent (for example documents on website, SMS documentation etc.).
  • Draft detailed responses to consultations in line with direction from SA.
  • Work with SIMs and other on detail aspects of Client Specifications on Integrated Waste Management.
  • Act as client for Strategic Environmental Assessments where necessary.
  • Maintain the peer-peer relationship with technical experts in SLCs and regulator communities.
  • Provide a resource to support governments in the development of policies.
  • Provide expertise and drafting resource to support Government in the preparation and drafting, consultation on, and maintenance of policy positions.
  • As a national role, travel is required in order to fulfil the requirements fully, typically 1-2 days per week away from the office.

Essential skills

  • The ability to work well in a team and encourage delivery through others, especially the ability to bring together teams of technical experts from SLCs and RWM
  • Technical credibility and peer respect are essential
  • Detail focused and factually based approach to delivery
  • General knowledge of the nuclear and waste management sectors both in UK and abroad (particularly USA, France and Japan) and of other relevant sectors
  • General knowledge of UK regulatory framework for nuclear and waste management sectors
  • General knowledge of UK policy framework for nuclear and waste management sectors
  • Detailed knowledge of UK policy framework for area of accountability
  • Detailed knowledge of international policy positions, treaty obligations, IAEA guidelines etc. for area of accountability
  • Detailed knowledge of NDA strategy in area of accountability
  • Knowledge of SLC delivery plans as they apply to area of accountability
  • Credible and relevant publication record in peer reviewed journals
  • Educated to degree standard, in a relevant field.
  • Candidates must be able to achieve SC security clearance

Desired skills

  • Chartered status in an appropriate Professional Body.
