CNL is looking to hire a chemist with an advanced degree and 5 to 10 years’ experience.  The incumbent must have a demonstrated ability to attract R&D funding from commercial and federal organisations.  The position is essential to maintain CNL’s expertise and meet the S&T needs for Small Modular Reactor designs over the next 3 to 5-year period.

Role description

KeySource Thomas Thor has been engaged by Canadian Nuclear Laboratories (CNL) to fill the Fission Products Chemist role at their Chalk River Laboratories in the upper Ottawa Valley.  CNL is Canada’s premier nuclear science and technology organization, serving Canada as an enabler of business innovation and technology transfer.

Responsibilities

  • Propose innovative research proposals to address customer needs;
  • Resolves complex multi-disciplinary problems;
  • Influences company’s strategic technical direction of the fission products release research program;
  • Support the establishment of a state-of-the-art research program in fission products release;
  • Fission-product release, transport and deposition experiments;
  • Fuel deformation experiments;
  • Development, maintenance and validation for fission-product release and transport computer codes (e.g., SOPHAEROS);
  • Writes and reviews deliverable documents related to work packages listed above and other related fields;
  • Participates in international collaborative research programs in the nuclear safety area; and
  • Participates in writing and review of procedural documents for laboratories and hot-cell experiments.

Essential skills

  • A minimum of 5 to 10 years of experience in experimental fission product chemistry or related discipline is required.
  • A demonstrated leadership role through list of publications and the number of completed innovative S&T in the discipline is required.
  • Direct experience with hot cell experiments is beneficial.
  • Experience with the experimental aspects of nuclear fuel irradiations and interpretation of the results is desirable.
  • A strong command of the English language, both written and oral, is required for this position. The successful candidate will be an enthusiastic self-starter who enjoys working with a team of experimental chemists and fission product release professionals and technologists.
