KeySource Thomas Thor has been engaged by Canadian Nuclear Laboratories (CNL) to fill the Operations Research Analyst position at their Chalk River Laboratories in the upper Ottawa Valley.  This position reports to the Manager of R&D Facilities and Operations Research Branch at Canadian Nuclear Laboratories.

Role description

The R&D Facilities and Operations Research Branch provides support for R&D facilities operations and perform operational research to enhance the economic, reliability, effectiveness and efficiency of nuclear systems.  The purpose of this position is to conduct R&D related to nuclear systems through the utilization of operations research techniques.  This work is critical to evaluate new nuclear systems (such as small modular reactors) ensuring all technical, social and political aspects of the system have been considered.  The incumbent will be working on projects in the Federal Science and Technology (S&T) program but could also be involved in providing services to other organizations within CNL as well as potential commercial projects.  The incumbent will also assist others in the Operations Research Section on various projects as required.

Responsibilities

  • Collaborates with, and lead in the future, a team of technical experts in the area of operations research to perform analyses assessing the implications of various decisions at a system level
  • Involved in economic analyses to demonstrate the cost effectiveness of the system
  • Assess social and political implications related to various nuclear technologies/applications
  • Works on any other project undertaken by the Operations Research Section, as directed by the Section Head and Branch Manager
  • Prepares proposals for Federal S&T as well Commercial Projects
  • Guides, and supervises in the future, junior staff in fulfilling project scopes and requirements
  • Monitors, and manages in the future, project progress and budget
  • Prepares reports and manuscripts for publications based on the research conducted
  • Provides monthly, quarterly and annual reports to the Manager and Customers, where applicable

Essential skills

  • Masters/PhD degree or equivalent in Engineering or Science from a University of recognized standing.  A degree in Operations Research, Industrial Engineering, Management Science, or Business Administration is preferred
  • A minimum of 5 years relevant experience in Operations Research
  • Knowledge of Operations Research techniques, specifically systems analysis and economics
  • Skills in setting appropriate personal, unit, departmental, divisional or organizational priorities and direction
  • Planning skills to coordinate work for meeting established schedule of projects
  • Effective verbal and written communication skills to persuade, influence or educate various audiences (e.g., Senior Management or Executive, customers, regulators, public, etc.)
  • Strong scientific writing skills demonstrated through recent publications
  • Knowledge of Microsoft software, such as Word, Excel and PowerPoint
