Role description

We are searching for a Process Engineer to be part of a one-of-a-kind project to support the development of the first 4th Generation small modular (nuclear) reactor in Canada for an industry-leading R&D nuclear organization.

As the Process Engineer you will have the unique opportunity of working closely with Senior technical and engineering teams to assist in the timely delivery of projects for the MMR design, and in so doing gain key engineering experience.

This is a full-time permanent and initially remote employment opportunity, with eventual office location in Ottawa or Toronto, ON.

Knowledge, Experience and Skills

Responsibilities will be carried out under the supervision, guidance, or direction of Senior engineers or the Engineering Manager:

  • Supporting engineering design projects from conceptual design stage through construction and commissioning.
  • Perform engineering calculations to support design basis inputs.
  • Engage with equipment vendors on technical inputs for the plant design.
  • Prepare pre-conceptual / conceptual engineering drawings (e.g., Process flow diagrams, P&IDs, I&C block diagrams, general arrangements).
  • Take part in and support specification and review of detailed engineering drawings and engineering design documents (e.g., head load calculations, I/O and load lists, mechanical equipment lists).
  • Perform basic heat and material balances on plant sub-systems.
  • Perform thermodynamic calculations for energy usage for equipment.
  • Participate is HAZOP and plant design reviews.
  • Drafting and preparing project scope, schedules, proposals, estimates, change notices, budgets, and similar project/commercial documents
  • Supporting project engineers and project managers as needed in monitoring costs, schedules, progress, coordinating activities, and preparing project documentation (minutes, action lists, issue lists, etc.)

Required Qualifications

  • University degree (B. Eng.) in process or mechanical engineering from an accredited University program.
  • A minimum of 2-3 years of relevant engineering experience in their respective discipline.
  • Registered with the PEO as an Engineering Intern (EIT) in the Province of Ontario.
  • Basic modelling and analysis using software packages such as MathCad, Matlab, Microsoft Excel.
  • Keen interest in and support of the nuclear power industry.

Desired Skills

  • Proficiency in CAD software (e.g., AutoCAD) would be an asset.
  • Familiarity with regulatory codes and standards including CSA and IEC would be an asset.
  • Bilingualism (English, French) would be an asset.
