Role description

The WATSS Project Director will oversee cross functional teams developing the key structures, systems and components (SSCs) for Moltex’s WAste To Stable Salt (WATSS) facility. The successful candidate will ensure the project objectives are harmonized and lead cross-functional team members in technology development, R&D execution, and deployment of SSC requirements, while ensuring customer satisfaction.

The WATSS Project Director will report to the Chief Operating Officer, North America, and work alongside various department managers, including the heads of Licensing & Regulatory Affairs, R&D and Engineering, to ensure the ability to perform the required work in a timely, cost effective manner. The WATSS Project Director will work closely with the SSR-W Project Director.

This position can be based in Saint John, New Brunswick or Toronto, Ontario. Extensive travel to Saint John would be required for a Toronto-based candidate.

Knowledge, Experience and Skills

  • Direct cross-functional teams (including engineering design, systems engineering, manufacturing, supply chain, regulatory, quality, finance and marketing) throughout the project lifecycle for key SSCs
  • Collaborate with the engineering design lead to ensure the successful delivery of engineering products and milestones
  • Plan and coordinate high-level project work, including the R&D breakdown structure and integrated master schedule, to ensure on-time project delivery that meets internal and external market requirements
  • Develop and implement project management best practices, processes and continuous improvement initiatives
  • Manage the WATSS project budget, including project staff costs
  • Manage and coach project staff in a way that allows them to contribute fully, and ensures a culture of collaboration, speed, professional excellence, openness and integrity, while delivering world-class designs and services
  • Seek concurrence from the technical committee at pre-agreed intervals on design efficacy and major technical deliverables
  • Recruit specialized expertise and source external support as required and based on approved plans
  • Ensure design processes are in place as required to safely and correctly perform work in accordance with Moltex’s objectives and regulatory requirements
  • Prepare scopes of work for in-house personnel and outsourced contractors
  • Oversee and manage planning, delivery and execution of any experiments needed to support the design. This must be done in the simplest manner, at the lowest possible cost to meet the expected timelines for reactor commercialisation
  • Work with functional management to reach and maintain appropriate project staffing levels
  • Identify project risks and develop risk management plans and mitigation strategies
  • Analyze project critical paths and identify ways to accelerate timelines, reduce costs and mitigate risks
  • Lead technical design reviews and business gate reviews with the technical committee
  • Provide regular progress updates to the COO, CEO and the Moltex Energy Canada board

Skills, Qualifications & Experience

  • Bachelor of Science degree in engineering or related field required
  • Master of Business Administration (MBA) or Project Management Professional (PMP) certification desired
  • 7+ years of related technical experience or training and a proven track record of project or technical leadership
  • Motivated self-starter with the ability to work effectively as part of a team
  • Ability to multi-task with exceptional organizational skills
  • Ability to thrive in a dynamic environment with changing requirements and priorities
  • Effective leadership skills, with experience leading direct communications and cooperative work with customers
  • Ability to interpret customer needs and develop project requirements
  • Experience with chemical processing, power generation or large industrial products desired
