Role description

  • Interfaces with onsite and offsite treatment, storage and disposal units for acceptance of various waste streams for treatment and/or disposal including development of waste profiles and related documentation.
  • Works with the RSO as a technical expert on the NRC Branch Technical Position Paper on Concentration Averaging of radioactive waste and radioactive material as applicable.
  • Interprets waste management and transportation rules, regulations and policies to assist generators in the proper and compliant management of facility and project waste, including low level, TRU, hazardous, recyclable and non-regulated.
  • Teams and interfaces with treatment, storage, disposal, generators and/or other customers and regulators to resolved specific waste management related concerns.
  • Reviews existing procedures and prepares revisions and checklist updates to incorporate regulatory requirements and changes as well as customer driven revisions.
  • Provides planning, coordination and radiological controls information for the various Waste Management, 10CFR61.55, NMMSS, IEAM, LLW, and BSFR reports as other radiation safety reports and reviews.
  • Completes waste management work plans and enforces compliance.
  • Evaluates radiological conditions and prescribes controls and protective measures, reviews work packages and participates in work planning to ensure appropriate waste management controls and practices are included to ensure regulatory compliance for transportation and disposal.
  • Oversees and compiles scaling factors for secondary waste characterization. Develops work plans for processing radioactive waste using concentration averaging per regulatory guidance.
  • Investigates and reports on incidents of radiation exposure and contamination spread.
  • As needed, assumes responsibilities as an alternate radiation safety officer on a federal or agreement state radioactive material license (with appropriate experience and federal or agreement state regulatory approval). May be designated by name on a federal or agreement state radioactive material license.
  • Provides oversight, direction, and training to organization staff to ensure all radiation safety activities related to a site, program, project, function and/or facility process(es) are conducted in compliance with established rules, regulations, policies, procedures, and ALARA Principles and to ensure high quality products and services for EnergySolutions customers.
  • Assists Dosimetry Manager with technical expert reviews of bioassay data as needed for internal dose assignments as applicable.
  • Performs other duties as assigned.

Knowledge, Experience and Skills

  • Effective written and verbal communication skills
  • Detailed knowledge of local, state, and federal radiation safety compliance regulations
  • Detailed knowledge of the interpretation of local, state, and federal radiation safety compliance regulations
  • Detailed knowledge of the principles and practices of radiation safety
  • Detailed knowledge of operational health physics and one or more of the following areas: dosimetry, instrumentation, and waste management
  • Demonstrated ability to collect, organize, analyze, and report qualitative and quantitative data
  • Detailed knowledge and use of the NRC BTP for Concentration Averaging, Characterization, and 10CFR61.55
  • Detailed knowledge regarding radioactive waste and radiological engineering principles and tools
  • Advanced proficiency in Microsoft Office, particularly for data collection and processing tasks to assist with electronic tracking of site data
  • Working knowledge of automated data processing using VBA (Visual Basic for Applications), Python, or a similar programming language
  • Demonstrated ability to handle more complex work and work broader in scope such as more than one subject area focus

Education:

  • Bachelor’s degree required in Health Physics or related discipline
  • Master’s Degree in Health Physics or related discipline preferred

Certifications Desired:

  • National Registry of Radiation Protection Technologist (NRRPT) certification preferred
  • Certified Health Physicist (CHP) preferred
  • Federal or agreement state regulatory approval may be required

Required Experience:

  • Minimum of 8 years experience in operational health physics
  • A minimum of 3 years of supervisory experience in operational health physics
