Role description

Would you like to be at the heart of developing the new generation of nuclear reactors?

We are supporting our partner, Moltex Energy in seeking a Head of Engineering to join their growing team in their efforts to contribute and respond to the world’s critical necessity of clean energy. They have the technology to transform the energy landscape, ushering in a new age of clean, low-cost energy for all.

Position summary

The Head of Engineering will report to the Managing Director and work closely with the Head of Safety Case and other discipline leads to develop a fully substantiated engineering design for the SSR-U reactor.

This is an exciting opportunity to help develop a technology that can make a significant contribution to reducing global CO2 emissions. The design is progressing fast, and Moltex needs somebody who can hit the ground running!

What Moltex offers…

Located in Birchwood, Warrington, Moltex offers the opportunity to provide engineering leadership and expertise to a diverse and growing team of engineering, safety case, and scientific professionals working in an agile project delivery environment. For those on board, it is going to be a demanding but rewarding journey.

Other benefits include:

  • Learning and development resources
  • Excellent growth opportunities
  • 25 days annual leave and 8 statutory holidays
  • Company pension scheme with options
  • Free, secure onsite parking
  • Close to travel networks and within walking distance of Birchwood station

Responsibilities

The Head of Engineering will be responsible for leading the engineering design and substantiation to achieve the safety case requirements and help deliver the first-of-a-kind SSR-U by the end of the decade. Whilst the focus of this role is on mechanical/nuclear engineering, it will also require a good understanding of and contribution to other engineering and scientific disciplines.

Moltex’s approach to optimising the SSR-U is to develop the safety case and design in parallel, with one informing the other. This means that effective working with the Head of Safety Case will be paramount.

Initially the role will necessitate hands-on engineering involvement, working with the current team to finalise the concept design. Thereafter, the role will involve progressively growing the engineering team and processes to develop the detailed design.

The role will include leadership in the following areas:

  • Drafting and maintenance of the reactor engineering design descriptions
  • Optioneering and selection of engineering solutions
  • Selection and implementation of engineering design modelling and substantiation approaches
  • Development of the detailed design
  • Review and approval of engineering work
  • Development of engineering processes and systems
  • Management of third-party engineering suppliers
  • Engineering oversight and support to the development of experiments and test rigs
  • Presentation and substantiation of the design to a variety of stakeholders, including regulatory bodies

Skills, qualifications & experience

  • Knowledge of reactor design is essential
  • Higher degree in mechanical or nuclear engineering, and relevant industry experience
  • Experience developing and managing an engineering team
  • Knowledge of and capability to manage other disciplines (e.g. civil design, EC&I, etc.)
  • A problem-solver who is driven to find simple solutions and not to over-complicate development and design work
  • Ability to thrive in a rapidly changing environment
  • Excellent team worker and an effective communicator
