Role description

Ready for a new challenge? Are you an experienced lawyer with excellent communication skills? Radioactive Waste Management (RWM) is looking for up to three skilled Legal Counsel, with direct experience of public-sector procurement and/or Infrastructure Planning & Property law (preferably gained from major infrastructure projects).

RWM is at a crucial and exciting stage of growth in the programme to develop a geological disposal facility (GDF).  As Legal Counsel or Senior Legal Counsel you will provide high quality, pragmatic and solution-focused legal advice to RWM staff (including senior management), which will be critical to enabling programme delivery.

You will provide legal advice in relation to:

  • RWM’s strategic procurements, including in relation to the Public Contracts Regulations 2015 as well as draft a wide range of agreements;

  • RWM’s approach to obtaining key permits and consents within the specific policy context relating to geological disposal, covering environmental permitting, infrastructure planning and nuclear site licensing as well as acquiring the necessary land rights.

Essential skills

You will use your experience either of major public procurements or infrastructure programmes to provide clear and concise advice to senior staff.  The ability to advise in other general areas would be ideal (e.g., state aid, employment, data protection, freedom of information, litigation, and legal challenges etc.).

Whilst in-house experience is preferred, this position would suit you whether you come from an in-house or private practice background.

RWM is growing. With an organisation that is to grow from 200 people to 400+ people over the next 4 years, your responsibilities will expand with it. As a result, this role offers you the opportunity to develop both your skill set and your career.

The base salary is competitive with a range of £60,000 – £75,000+ and an annual bonus (up to 35%), 30 days of annual leave (with public holidays on top) and one of the most generous pensions currently available in the UK (Civil Service Alpha Pension Scheme).

They’re not just about 9-5. Your life outside of work is important to RWM and so they welcome conversations about flexibility to help you meet both personal and professional commitments.
